Recently, Fortnite has released an all-new tactical shooter game, aiming to enter the lucrative space of first-person competitive shooting. Epic is trying to compete against the giants of the industry, like Valve and Riot. One might think that juggling two games at once would impact Fortnite, but their new game does not affect Fortnite in any way. Fortnite has received rank changes along with some additional content. So, in this blog, we are going to talk about that—specifically, Fortnite’s ranking system.
What goes into the ranking system? How does it calibrate your rank? What factors matter the most in rank calibration, and how can you manipulate them to your advantage? If you want to know the answers to these questions, then sit tight and let’s dive into the world of Fortnite and its ranking system.
What Goes Into The Ranking System?
Firstly, you have to understand that Fortnite’s ranking system works on an Elo-based system, and its matchmaking is skill-based. This works exactly as it sounds—it pairs players according to their Elo and creates matches within the same skill group so that everyone faces equally matched opponents. While this may sound simple enough, it is not, because Fortnite also uses a hidden MMR (Matchmaking Rating). And why do they do that, you might ask?
That is because players sometimes take a break from the game, causing them to lose their in-game rank. However, since they were only away for a short while, their skill set—such as aim, movement, and game sense—remains the same. That is why Epic uses a hidden MMR to ensure players are still placed in their respective skill groups. So, there are mainly two factors that likely influence the ranking system. The first is your visible MMR, which you can see right after a match, and the second is your hidden MMR, which you cannot see. Although hidden MMR is harder to raise and remains stable for a longer period, visible MMR changes after every match and lasts only for the season.
Fortnite Ranks:
Currently, Fortnite has 8 rank divisions and 18 individual ranks to specify the skill set of their players; here’s the list of ranks.
- Bronze (I, II, III)
- Silver (I, II, III)
- Gold (I, II, III)
- Platinum (I, II, III)
- Diamond (I, II, III)
- Elite
- Champion
- Unreal.
The bronze was the worst rank in the game and unreal was an unreal rank to achieve. The highest percentage of players are stuck in the silver division of the game followed by the gold division and about only half a percent of players have achieved the unreal ever in the game. How Does It Calibrate Your Rank?
So there are two different types of calibration present in the game. First one is the new rank calibration for players who are playing the ranked play for the first time And the second one is the rank recalibration which everybody goes through after a season or after the rank decay. Explaining the first one is a little more complex than the rank recalibration because of the lack of context.
So if you’re playing ranked on a new account the ranking system will first put you against bots and other new players and based on the performance of those matches you’ll earn your hidden MMR and your visible MMR not only that if you play exceptionally well in the first few matches you’ll get place much higher in the rank ladder. Other factors also play a part in it but as I said earlier there is not a whole lot of context to talk from. In the rank recalibration of your rank however things get simpler. The game puts you against similarly ranked players who have the same hidden MMR as you and based on your performance against those players the game recalibrates your rank and that is how you get your rank back after the season.
What Factors Are The Most Important In Rank Up:
There are three most important factors when it comes to ranking up and I will list down each of them and explain each one briefly. First is your placement in the match, second is how eliminations you have gotten in the match and last one is the game mode you were playing.
Placement In The Match:
The first thing that matters the most in the ranking system is your placement in the match. If you were placed in the top 20 you would get different RPs (rank points) if you were placed in the top 10 you would get more RPs. It does not matter how many eliminations you have gotten or how much damage you did to the enemies. If you get placed into the top 10 you will get much xp than usual.
Eliminations:
The second thing that will help you score more RP is eliminations. The timing of those eliminations does matter but not that much if you still get placed decent enough in the match. The exact amount of RP you get per kill is not defined but there’s a certainty that the more eliminations you get the better RP you’ll earn.
Game mode:
So mainly there is Battle Royale Ranked Mode and the zero build ranked mode. You can play both of them to earn your rank.
But the match does also matter so let’s say you’re playing a qualifier for FNCS (fortnite champion series) or if you are playing FNCS global your rank gains would be astronomical as compared to someone who is playing the game while sitting in the basement of his home. So the game mode and the match type I would say matter a lot.
